Library Safari: Pangaea's Wild Animal Show

Did you know that you can meet wild animals and learn about jungle life without ever leaving your local city? Welcome to Pangaea, a live wild animal show at the Library, held Monday, June 24th!

The Library is delighted to welcome Pangaea as part of our summer programming for the past several years. Participants in this exciting and educational show were able to see and meet animals from a variety of places, from the jungles of Madagascar to our very own Everglades, and hear fun and engaging information about their lives, needs, and habits from professional trainers who work with the animals throughout their lives. Over a hundred patrons visited on Monday to enjoy visits from lemurs, snakes, anteaters, and more!

Participants from all over the community learned about conservation efforts designed to protect different animal species, as well as learning about which animals are native to South Florida and which are invasive species that are now here to stay. Children were invited to help carry a Burmese python, make a shoulder bridge for a kinkajou to climb across, and even handle a fearsome-looking (but very gentle!) Emperor scorpion while learning about individual habitats and feeding habits.

The Library hosted two Pangaea shows, one of which was also part of our Summer Camp programming, and each was over an hour of fun-filled learning and exciting animal encounters. Some questions asked were "how do you tell the difference between a frog and a toad?" (Answer: frogs have a slimy mucous layer on their skin, while toads are dry and pebbly!), "why are some snakes yellow?" (Answer: albino snakes are white and yellow instead of the usual browns!), and "why do fennec foxes have such big ears?" (Answer: to give them sensitive hearing to find lizards in the desert, and to help cool them down in the noon heat!).

Feeling like you missed out? Don't worry! The Library will be hosting two more Pangaea shows in July! Since these programs are very popular, patrons must register each person who will attend online in the Library website's calendar. Register for either the 2:00 show or the 3:00 show on Monday, July 15th, and join us for another fun-filled safari with animals from all over the world!

New Event Spotlight: TechConnect!

Looking for tech help? Start at the Library!

The Library is excited to announce a new program this summer: TechConnect! If you're looking to learn more about cybersecurity, how the internet and apps work, or just looking for a little tutoring on your personal device, the savvy teens of TechConnect are standing by!

TechConnect is a volunteer program, run by local high school students, that aims to bridge the gap between generations as well as sharing important information about how to safely and effectively use computers, smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices. Stop by any Wednesday at 3:00 PM to meet up with them in a fun, informal environment, where you can ask your tech questions and get some on-the-spot answers, or learn about their favorite subject - cybersecurity and how to keep yourself and your devices safe while you surf the web.

Patrons who attend the program should bring their own smartphones, tablets, laptops, or similar devices if they would like direct help with them. If you don't have any questions today, that's all right, too - come on in and let the TechConnect crew know you're here to learn about technology, and they'll take it from there!

The TechConnect program is held in the Tutoring Area (to your left past the Young Adult section when entering the Library) every Wednesday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Come on in and join us!

Summer Reading 2024: Adventure Begins at Your Library Kickoff Event!

It's June at the Library, and that can mean only one thing - it's time for the Summer Reading program! Our theme this year is Adventure Begins at Your Library!

The North Miami Beach Library participates in the Summer Reading program, a nationwide program in libraries to encourage continued reading and learning during the summer months and prevent loss of reading skill during the break from school each year, and it's time once again! Patrons of all ages, from toddlers just learning to read to adults of every generation, are invited to sign up for this free program.

Three children, two boys and one girl, stand in the library bookmobile holding up paperback books with big smiles on their faces. They are sweaty from the heat and one of the boys is carrying a soccer ball.

Participants track all the books they read through the months of June and July and then return their list to the Library, where our crack team of professional librarians will total up all the pages read over the course of the summer. The patrons who read the most in each age category are eligible to win a variety of age-appropriate prizes - last year, the Library was able to give away laptops, tablets, book sets, and craft kits to our star readers!

Wondering how it all works? Here are a few questions we've been asked...

Q: How do I sign up?

A: Just visit the Library any time before the end of July and ask to sign up for the program, and one of our staff will be delighted to help you! All you need to do is have a library card (and if you don't, we'll help you sign up for a free one - make sure you bring your ID!) and sign up with your name, contact information, and age. The Library will give you a reading log and a free tote bag (while supplies last) just for signing up, and you'll be ready to start logging your books! If you can't make it into the Library right now, you can also sign up online at our Summer Reading webpage.

Q: What do I need to read?

A: Anything you want! The Library will honor any type of book, from biographies to fiction to graphic novels, and is happy to count ebooks and audiobooks as well. (Please make your book selections age-appropriate, however - we can't give adults credit for reading Curious George.) Unfortunately, we can't count non-book reading such as websites, blogs, or newspapers, but you are welcome to read in any language you choose.

Q: Is there any other way to participate?

A: Yes! Patrons who attend our smorgasbord of Summer Reading programs (see below for more information about those!) will be given credit for participating in each one. Whenever you attend a summer program, visit a librarian afterward to get a stamp showing that you did, and you'll get a few bonus pages added to your total.

Q: Do I have to live in North Miami Beach?

A: No! Everyone in our greater Miami family is welcome to participate (even if you're participating at another library, too!). All you need to do is have a library card with the North Miami Beach Public Library and make sure that you sign up with us. (We can't ship prizes, though, so make sure you're able to visit the Library in person if you want to be eligible to win in your category.)

Children's Librarian LeAnn Haste reads aloud from a picture book while a group of children and their parents sit around her on a colorful rug to listen.

Q: What's the deadline to turn in my reading log?

A: The last day to turn in reading logs at the Library will be Friday, August 9th, at 5:00 p.m. Logs turned in after this time may not be eligible to win prizes, since we may not have time to total them up and include them in the final count. If you'll be out of town or are concerned that you may not return your log on time, you can also turn them in early to any librarian when you're finished logging books for the program. (Make sure you're finished, though - once the logs are turned in, we can't accept additional books added after the fact.)

The Library's End-of-Summer & Back-to-School event will be held on August 18th, and will include awards, prizes, and accolades for all our incredible community readers! (If you can't attend that day, you can still win prizes - the Library will notify you and you can come in later in order to pick them up.) The event will also include exciting information about our upcoming fall programs and what else is happening at the Library, as well as fun, games, and performers, so don't miss out!

But what about events before August? The Library is excited to host a ton of interesting, educational, and just plain fun events over the course of the summer:
